A big step, and a happy one

For many Bohra girls, nikah also means a new city. From Dahod to Mumbai, from Burhanpur to Pune, from Godhra to Dubai. It is exciting, and it can also feel lonely at first. Both feelings are normal.

Before you move

  • Talk about the first few months: where you will live, how far it is from his work, what a normal day looks like.
  • Ask about the nearest masjid and the local jamaat.
  • Keep your papers ready and safe: ITS card, certificates, ID.
Knowing where your community is makes a new place feel smaller.

The first month

  1. Go to the masjid and the thaaliSay salaam in your new mohalla. Bohra families in the city were new once too.
  2. Learn your area on footThe market, the chemist, the bus or train stop.
  3. Call home often, and make one new friend hereBoth matter.

Keep your own dreams

Many girls from our hometowns are teachers, designers, doctors and businesswomen. Moving to the city can open more doors, not fewer. Talk with your husband about what you want to do, and make a plan together.

When it feels hard

Homesickness passes, but it is real. Tell your husband how you feel; he cannot help if he does not know. Lean on your new jamaat.

Remember why you came: to build a home of your own, with someone who shares your deen and your values.
