Before the rishta

A rishta in Dubai or abroad: what to ask first

Considering a Bohra rishta with someone working in Dubai, the Gulf or abroad? What to ask and plan before you say yes, from work to family visits.

Many good rishtas cross borders

Many Bohra men from India work in Dubai, across the Gulf, and further. A rishta with someone abroad can mean a good future. It also means more planning than a rishta in your own city.

Five questions to ask

  1. How long do you plan to stay abroad?A few years, or for good?
  2. Will I join you right after nikah, or later? And what decides the timing?
  3. Will I be able to work or study there?Ask what is possible, not only what is hoped.
  4. How often do you come home? And how often would we visit family?
  5. What is the jamaat like where you live?Your community there will matter a lot.
Ask for honest answers, not hopeful ones.

Getting to know someone far away

Distance makes it harder to see someone's daily life. Talk at different times of day, about ordinary things.

  • Video calls, not only messages.
  • Meet in person, with family, before deciding, if you can.
  • Talk about what happens if plans change.

Before you go

A new city, a new jamaat, family far away.

Moving abroad after nikah is a big change: new rules, new routines, family far away.
